Insider guide

Shopping Capitol Hill.

The story

Capitol Hill's shops fall into three pockets. Broadway E runs from E Pike St to E Roy St. The Pike/Pine corridor covers E Pike and E Pine streets from Melrose Ave to 12th Ave. The third is Melrose Market on Melrose Ave and nearby 10th Ave, home to Glasswing and Elliott Bay Book Company. Twice Sold Tales and Pretty Parlor are on side streets, Harvard Ave and Summit Ave E, so plan a loop rather than a straight line.

Books

Elliott Bay Book Company (1521 10th Ave), founded in 1973, has more than 150,000 titles on cedar shelves across several levels, a Little Oddfellows café inside and author readings almost every week; check its events calendar before you go. Twice Sold Tales started as a book cart in 1987 and sells a large, fast-changing used stock from Shakespeare to science fiction, plus rare and collectible titles. It has six live-in bookstore cats. Charlie's Queer Books, whose current shop is in Fremont, plans a second store just west of 12th and E Pike in November 2026, with an event space, coffee and a wine bar.

Clothes, Vintage and Resale

Glasswing in Melrose Market mixes men's, women's and unisex clothing and shoes with jewelry, apothecary goods, ceramics, furniture and live plants, and runs quarterly workshops. Sway and Cake, at 12th and Pike since 2019, sells women's clothing and jewelry from emerging and established designers plus its own Seattle-designed label. On E Pine, Taylor Stitch carries the San Francisco brand's menswear and, from time to time, vintage pieces from its archive, and Warby Parker books eye exams online.

For secondhand, Pretty Parlor, open since 2001, sells vintage and retro-style clothing and runs a bridal boutique of vintage wedding dresses and reproduction gowns. Throwbacks NW is all Seattle sports: '90s Sonics tees, Seahawks hats and buttons, jerseys, snap jackets and mostly unworn vintage snapbacks. Crossroads Trading buys, sells and trades name-brand clothing and accessories, so bring clothes to sell.

The Plant Store sells affordable houseplants, including baby-sized ones, plus terrariums and moss gardens, and runs gardening workshops. Molly Moon's Homemade Ice Cream, just south of Cal Anderson Park, churns everything on site.

Eating Between Shops

Cafe Suliman, a Middle Eastern wine bar, is inside Melrose Market with Glasswing. On the corridor, Meet Korean BBQ does tabletop barbecue with wagyu and kurobuta pork, and Tamari Bar is best known for sashimi. Farther east, Spinasse (1531 14th Ave) makes handmade Piedmontese pastas, Artusi next door (1535 14th Ave) is an aperitivo bar with small Italian plates, and Maripili Tapas Bar (1117 12th Ave) serves Galician tapas and paella. On Broadway, Annapurna Cafe does momo, and Taneda Sushi In Kaiseki is a nine-seat omakase counter.
